Our story

Colorado Utility Finders began in 2005. Matt and Susy Sweney — friends of the original owner from their construction days — bought the company and ran it from 2006 through 2020. They came from construction, built a strong construction-support business, and began taking on more design work in the early to mid-2010s.

Ian Gutzman took ownership in 2020 after training under the Sweneys. With a corporate and military background, he has continued growing the company, with engineering and design a heavy area of growth — while CUF still works closely with construction customers. The team serves a diverse mix of clients across Colorado’s Front Range, bringing technology into field processes and how information is managed and delivered, and doing a lot of work with municipalities — partnering with project managers, cities, and inspectors. The aim is tenacious, intent-driven work at a fair price — as a small, agile Colorado company helping build the state’s infrastructure.
